International Paper is a global leader in the paper and packaging industry and supplies a wide range of products that people rely on every day. The company produces uncoated papers and industrial and consumer packaging. Through xpedx, its North American distribution business, the company also offers printing, packaging, graphic arts, and maintenance and industrial products.

International Paper has operations, including pulp and paper mills and converting and packaging plants, in North America, Europe, Latin America, Russia, Asia and North Africa. As of December 31, 2008, we had approximately 61,700 employees, 42,700 of whom were located in the United States. International Paper stock is traded internationally on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2009, International Paper was ranked No. 97 among Fortune 500 companies and No. 361 on the Fortune Global 500. International Paper was named No. 1 for the seventh consecutive year in the Forest Products sector of Fortune magazine’s America’s Most Admired Companies list. Also, among all companies in the survey, International Paper received the top score on social responsibility. For the third year in a row, International Paper was named one of the world’s most ethical companies by Ethisphere magazine.

International Paper supports communities where its employees live and work. The International Paper Foundation has awarded grants of more than $60 million since 1995. Through the Foundation, International Paper employees give not only their money, but give their time to make communities better places to live.

International Paper has a long-standing policy of using no wood from endangered forests. International Paper supports mutual recognition of forest certification standards. We have encouraged the adoption of CERFLOR, the SFI Standard and other systems recognized by the global Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) council. The PEFC-endorsed systems around the globe, including the SFI program, now account for an area larger than the combined forest area of all 25 member countries of the European Union.

Facilities
In the United States at December 31, 2008, including the Containerboard, Packaging and Recycling business (CBPR) acquired in August 2008 from Weyerhaeuser Company, the Company operated 23 pulp, paper and packaging mills, 157 converting and packaging plants, 19 recycling plants and three bag facilities. Production facilities at December 31, 2008, in Europe, Asia, Latin America and South America included eight pulp, paper and packaging mills, 53 converting and packaging plants, and two recycling plants. We distribute printing, packaging, graphic arts, maintenance and industrial products principally through over 237 distribution branches in the United States and 35 distribution branches located in Canada, Mexico and Asia. At December 31, 2008, we owned or managed approximately 200,000 acres of forestlands in the United States, approximately 250,000 acres in Brazil and had, through licenses and forest management agreements, harvesting rights on government-owned forestlands in Russia.
