New York, NY - June 19, 2008 - Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, was proud to receive an Excellence Award for the stand-out packaging it produced to introduce Revlon's COLORIST Expert Color and Glaze System. This package, the result of design collaboration between Revlon and Shorewood, was one of ten Shorewood wins at the 65th Annual National Paperboard Packaging Competition held in New Orleans last month.
"It is very gratifying to have the acknowledgement of the industry, especially for a package that has the creative stamp of both Revlon and Shorewood," said Robert Anstine, vice president, marketing and business development, Shorewood Packaging. "Revlon's design team created a dramatic graphic treatment. Our structural design team designed both the inner cell structure that holds the product securely and the large oval window that dramatically displays it."
GENESIS, Shorewood's on-line design collaboration tool, played an important role in the development of this package. The Revlon and Shorewood creative teams "met" in a virtual conference room setting to make design modifications on the window and inner cell, significantly shortening the design process. A perforated, circular "color swatch" graphic element was added to the top lid to make it easier for consumers to make their color selection.
"Shorewood's collaborative approach to packaging development through its online design system really enhanced the teamwork between our companies," said Stephen Kuppe, senior vice president, chief procurement officer for Revlon. "It enabled us to get exactly what we wanted for the packaging of this product launch."
The package was printed in 6 colors using offset lithography on 20 point IP Everest SBS paperboard. It featured a special pearlized spot coating, embossing and silver hot foil stamping (on the back) and UV coating in all but the pearlized areas, all accomplished with just one pass of the press.
The prestigious National Paperboard Packaging competition is sponsored each year by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), the leading trade association serving converters and suppliers for all forms of paperboard-based packaging. Its mission is to honor the best in the industry in terms of quality, service and innovation.
According to Greg Erickson, vice president, marketing and communications for the PPC, "Out of tens of thousands of paperboard packages introduced in the North American marketplace, fewer than 200 were deemed by leading converters to be worthy of entry in the 2008 PPC competition. From these, winners were chosen based upon the opinions of an expert panel of judges selected by the PPC."
Judges in this year's competition were Dick Depaul, Depaul Associates; Richard O. Garber, Green Bay Packaging (retired); Harold Hughes, Michigan State University; Sandra Krasovec, Krasovec Design; Jeannie Spitler, Graphic Designer, Bill Wynkoop, Lazer Design Services.
