New York, NY - April 16, 2008 - Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, is expanding its greenchoice™ line of sustainable packaging options with its new SunLyte disc trays, which are manufactured entirely from recovered plastic derived from recycled beverage bottles.
SunLyte disc trays contain 100 percent post-consumer waste and are made of recycled polyethelene terephthalate (RPET), a plastic on Wal-Mart's list of preferred materials. SunLyte disc trays also exemplify three of Wal-Mart's 7 Rs for Sustainable Packaging - they're renewable, recycled and recyclable. SunLyte disc trays' recycled content means that two plastic water bottles are spared from incineration or land filling for every three 7" SunLyte tray used. In addition, RPET requires one-third less energy to process than virgin plastic, and 1 million trays use 11 tons of RPET and eliminate 16 tons of CO2 emissions. Further, SunLyte trays weigh 45 percent less than a standard jewel case and feature a slimmer profile, which allows 96 percent more units to be packed in a standard shipment case. As a result, a shipment of SunLyte disc trays requires half the number of trucks as an equal number of standard jewel cases. Ultimately, these attributes enable SunLyte tray customers to reduce truckload weight by approximately 8 percent and decrease fuel consumption by approximately 4 percent. SunLyte disc trays are highly durable and can be incorporated in standard disc packaging. The trays run well in manufacturing and can be auto-loadable, providing additional cost-effectiveness and efficiencies. Shorewood's greenchoice Environmental Solutions for Packaging and Displays program helps consumer goods marketers understand and meet sustainable packaging goals. The program includes an analysis of current packaging, with recommendations on package design and the use of alternative materials, to meet sustainable packaging requirements.
