New York, NY - May 28, 2008 - Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, was proud to receive both Innovation Excellence and Excellence Awards for NBC Universal's Eureka: Season One DVD package. These awards were among ten that Shorewood received at the 65th Annual National Paperboard Packaging Competition. Shorewood and NBC Universal were also the recipients of a Gold Award for The Bourne Files special package.
"We are especially proud of this win because the packaging for Eureka was the first 'green' example of sustainable packaging in our greenchoice™ Environmental Solutions program," said Karen Mika, senior vice president for Shorewood's home entertainment business. "Since we introduced this program in 2006, we have provided our customers with information an environmentally-responsible alternatives in packaging and P.O.P. displays."
The Eureka DVD package also fit NBC Universal's objectives for sustainable packaging. "They were looking for something dynamic and 'out of the box' in terms of creative impact," said Shorewood Account Executive Jeffrey Widro. "At the same time, they wanted to make an environmental statement in keeping with their parent company GE's 'Eco-Imagination' Project and the Wal-Mart Sustainable Packaging Initiative." The Shorewood team reached into its greenchoice™ Tool Box to create the right approach. The result was a DVD special package that is renewable, recyclable and made with recycled material. It was the first 7" DVD package to use PaperFoam® disc trays instead of plastic trays. PaperFoam is a natural starch-based material that is recyclable and biodegradable when composted. NBC Universal supplied the graphics and the Shorewood structural design team recommended a 6-panel Disc Pack with blue PaperFoam trays to complement the graphics. Teh package was enhanced with a book-style DVD sleeve with an extra panel die-cut to emphasize the fence graphic. The DVD package was printed using offset lithography and renewable vegetable-oil based inks on Cascades Prokote™ 100 percent recycled paperboard. This board contains 55 percent post-consumer and 45 percent post-industrial fiber.
The prestigious National Paperboard Packaging competition is sponsored each year by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), the leading trade association serving converters and suppliers for all forms of paperboard-based packaging. Its mission is to honor the best in the industry in terms of quality, service and innovation.
According to Greg Erickson, vice president, marketing and communications for the PPC, "Out of tens of thousands of paperboard packages introduced in the North American marketplace, fewer than 200 were deemed by leading converters to be worthy of entry in the 2008 PPC competition. From these, winners were chosen based upon the opinions of an expert panel of judges selected by the PPC."
Judges in this year's competition were Dick Depaul, Depaul Associates; Richard O. Garber, Green Bay Packaging (retired); Harold Hughes, Michigan State University; Sandra Krasovec, Krasovec Design; Jeannie Spitler, Graphic Designer, Bill Wynkoop, Lazer Design Services.
