New York, NY - June 19, 2008 - Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, was proud to receive Gold Awards in the 65th Annual National Paperboard Packaging Competition for Warner Brothers' NFL America's Game: Super Bowl Champions DVD series and Warner Brothers' Harry Potter years 1-5 Limited Edition Gift Set. "We were very excited when we learned that both of these special packages for Warner Brothers earned the acclaim of the packaging industry," said Karen Mika, senior vice president of Shorewood's home entertainment business. "Both projects speak volumes for our design capabilities and ability to collaborate with our customers."
The Gold Award for NFL America's Game: Super Bowl Champions DVD series was the result of Warner Brothers' request for a customized gift package for the 40 disc series. The gift set also features a bound book and four DVD interpack packages, each of which holds 10 discs with footage of the Super Bowl championship games from 1996 to 2005.
Shorewood's structural design team created the slip case and interpacks using graphics supplied by Warner Bros. and the NFL archives. Two rigid slip cases, each made of chipboard wrapped in Black Diamond Weave by FiberMark, Inc., fit one inside the other. The inner slip case has a crescent-shaped die-cut to help showcase the collection. The outer slipcase was designed with a metal tip-on panel that was embossed and placed into the debossed area of the slipcase. Warner Brothers was so pleased with the design, in fact, that the set has become the basis for future multi-disc sets from the company. Components of the set were printed using offset lithography, 4-color process, embossing and debossing, and the application of the brushed metal plate.
The second Gold Award for Warner Brothers' Harry Potter years 1-5 Limited Edition Gift Set was in recognition of the packaging created to simulate Harry Potter's travel trunk in a scaled-down version designed to hold seven discs.
The round-cornered trunk and Disc Packs were made of chipboard wrapped in Hyflex® Chrome and then antiques with an overall embossed pattern. Custom-made antiqued hinges and hardware fasteners were made to match those seen on the trunk from the films. The Disc Packs were held in place with black grosgrain ribbon and a Velcro® closing and a foil stamped embossed "wax" seal of the Harry Potter logo. A paperboard wrap and tray for the bookmark box and an APET cover held to hold the top packages in place. The package components were printed with offset lithography, using 4-color process plus a tinted overall aqueous coating and spot UV coating.
These awards were among ten that Shorewood received from the National Paperboard Packaging Competition. This prestigious competition is sponsored each year by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), the leading trade association serving converters and suppliers for all forms of paperboard-based packaging. Its mission is to honor the best in the industry in terms of quality, service and innovation.
According to Greg Erickson, vice president, marketing and communications for the PPC, "Out of tens of thousands of paperboard packages introduced in the North American marketplace, fewer than 200 were deemed by leading converters to be worthy of entry in the 2008 PPC competition. From these, winners were chosen based upon the opinions of an expert panel of judges selected by the PPC."
Judges in this year's competition were Dick Depaul, Depaul Associates; Richard O. Garber, Green Bay Packaging (retired); Harold Hughes, Michigan State University; Sandra Krasovec, Krasovec Design; Jeannie Spitler, Graphic Designer, Bill Wynkoop, Lazer Design Services.
