Shorewood Packaging Scores for Bridgestone Golf with Gold and Innovation Excellence Awards for Packaging

New York, NY - May 13, 2008 - Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, was proud to receive both Gold and Innovation Excellence Awards for the packaging that launched Bridgestone Golf's new e6+ golf balls.  These awards were among ten that Shorewood received at the 65th Annual National Paperboard Packaging Competition.

According to Leon Hill, international accounts executive for Shorewood, "Bridgestone wanted the packaging for this new product to have an elegant, understated pattern that would stand out among the sea of holography that currently characterizes golf ball packaging."  It was the perfect opportunity to use Shorewood's new Cast and Cure finish, a holographic transfer method that adds an embossed pattern at the end of the printing process.

The traditional outer box and golf ball folding cartons were printed using offset lithography and 6 colors on met poly board laminated to 16 point IP Everest® to give the package extra sheen.  The Cast and Cure finish was applied as an overall pattern to the printed sheets.

"The whole experience was a great success," said Daniel Johnston, art director for Bridgestone Golf.  "We wanted a solution for our new packaging that had a premium, unique look.  Shorewood's Cast and Cure process provided that look without a commitment to a large holographic board order."

The prestigious National Paperboard Packaging competition is sponsored each year by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), the leading trade association serving converters and suppliers for all forms of paperboard-based packaging.  Its mission is to honor the best in the industry in terms of quality, service and innovation.

According to Greg Erickson, vice president, marketing and communications for the PPC, "Out of tens of thousands of paperboard packages introduced in the North American marketplace, fewer than 200 were deemed by leading converters to be worthy of entry in the 2008 PPC competition.  From these, winners were chosen based upon the opinions of an expert panel of judges selected by the PPC."

Judges in this year's competition were Dick Depaul, Depaul Associates; Richard O. Garber, Green Bay Packaging (retired); Harold Hughes, Michigan State University; Sandra Krasovec, Krasovec Design; Jeannie Spitler, Graphic Designer, Bill Wynkoop, Lazer Design Services.
