What's New at Shorewood Packaging?

Shorewood Packaging Scores Two GRAMMY Award Nominations

New York, NY - January 27, 2006 - Three Shorewood-produced music packages are among the nominees for the 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Ani DiFranco's latest album from Righteous Babe Records, "Knuckle Down" and Thievery Corporation's "The Cosmic Game" from ESL Music are nominees for Best Recording Package. The Ray Charles special package, "Pure Genius: The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1952-1959)" from Rhino Records, is among the five nominees in the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package category.

The six-panel Digipak that Shorewood created for the "Knuckle Down" album was designed by Ani DiFranco and Art Director Brian Grunert. The package opens with a twist from top to bottom, instead of the standard left to right. It features a clear PVC slip case printed in four special PMS colors. This isn't the first GRAMMY nominated package for Ani DiFranco.  Her "Evolve" CD package, also produced by Shorewood, received a GRAMMY for Best Recording Package in 2004..

Brian Grunert said "Our collaborators at Shorewood Packaging are truly craftspeople - they deliver way beyond expectations. But that's not why I enjoy working with them so much. Actually, it's because they work so hard to raise expectations right from the start of a project. Whether it's turning us on to a cool material or production technique, or a helping to develop a new format, they are as interested as we are in making something truly unique - something different every time."

Shorewood created the six-panel Digipak with a clear tray for "The Cosmic Game" album at its Hendersonville, N.C. plant. The package was printed 4/1 (2 hits of black and 2 hits of PMS red 1795 over black) on 18 pt. SBS, coated one-side. The package has an overall matte UV coating. This album includes an eight page booklet with a self cover, which was printed 4/4 (2 hits each of black and PMS 485 red) on 80# Smooth Accent Opaque stock at Shorewood's Weaverville, N.C. plant.

"Having produced packages for Thievery Corporation and ESL Music in the past, they knew they could depend on us for excellent music packaging that stands out," said Mark Miller, account executive for Shorewood Packaging. "We collaborated with the customer to ensure we met their needs and delivered a high-quality product that is now getting a lot of recognition with a GRAMMY nomination."

The Grammy-nominated Ray Charles package is a true showcase. The outer box was designed by Shorewood's West Coast Package Development team to replicate a 1950s-era 45 rpm portable record player. It neatly houses eight Digipaks for seven CDS and one DVD plus an 80-page case-bound book.

"Shorewood Packaging created this package specifically for Rhino Entertainment to meet its unique packaging request," said Brit Davis, account executive for Shorewood who spearheaded the project since its inception. "Our customer was very impressed, in fact speechless, when they first saw this creative packaging solution."

According to Dan Davis, director of design & development for Shorewood, there was a strong field of outstanding special packaging in the market this year, so it is a tremendous honor to be among the top five in the running for a GRAMMY.

The winners will be announced during the 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards show Wednesday, Feb. 8.
