PaperFoam®

UMe First to Use New Recyclable, Biodegradable CD Package

Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, announced today the introduction of a new environmentally-friendly packaging component to its new product portfolio -- PaperFoam® 5" CD trays.  This packaging technology was developed by PaperFoam BV, a company based in The Netherlands.

PaperFoam® is an exciting, "green" packaging component that is paper-recyclable and biodegradable when composted.  It is manufactured in a patented, one-step injection molded process using a starch-based fiber material.

Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), a unit of Universal Music Group, the world's largest music company, is the first Shorewood customer to use this new "green" product in media packaging.  Its newest release, The Millennium Collection series is showcased in a 4-panel CD-package that features PaperFoam® CD-trays and recycled paperboard.  The Millennium Collection CD series, which consists of more than 60 renowned artists, will be available exclusively at Wal-Mart for three months before being released to all retailers in 2007.

"Looking at the way today's consumers are storing their music, which is often without the jewel box, and retailers' focus on sustainability, the move to this packaging made total sense," said Michael Davis, executive vice president and general manager, UMe.  "The result is a completely repackaged CD that's good for the planet and good for the consumer."

"We are very excited that UME has chosen to incorporate this latest addition to our media packaging product line in The Millennium Collection packaging," says Robert Anstine, Shorewood vice president, marketing and business development.  "PaperFoam® provides a package that is recyclable, renewable and biodegradable when it is composted."

"The objective of our New Product and Creative teams is to identify and commercialize packaging solutions that create unique brand identity for our customers' products," adds Greg Chup, Shorewood new product manager.  "PaperFoam® accomplishes this goal and demonstrates our shared commitment to the environment."

PaperFoam® is available in various colors, can be embossed and printed and provides excellent dust-free, scratch-free product protection.  It has the added benefit of preventing product piracy and counterfeiting since it cannot be duplicated easily.
