International Paper Foodservice Business Earns Third-Party Certification
Memphis, Tenn. - November 12, 2007 - International Paper Foodservice Business announced today that it has successfully completed a label-use audit to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) standard, allowing it to label its fiber-based products manufactured in the United States. The corrugated boxes in which the products are shipped will also be SFI certified.
The move comes after the company announced earlier this year that all of its U.S. pulp and paper mills and container plants are now third-party certified to the SFI standard and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) standard to ensure their products are made from sustainable wood fiber.
"We believe forest certification, chain of custody accountability and labeling options are important to the health and strenght of our industry and to our reputation as environmental stewards," said Austin Lance, Vice President and General Manager of International Paper Foodservice. "By certifying our renewable fiber-based products, we are helping our customers communicate their commitment to a sustainable future."
Acquiring independent third-party certification from SFI ensures that best harvesting practices are used to protect air, water, soils and wildlife, and that no wood used comes from endangered forests. Consumers can choose products that meet the highest environmental standards by looking for certified products made by International Paper.
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative®, the largest independent North American forest certification standard, is an internationally recognized environmental program that works to broaden the practices of sustainable forestry. SFI is the larger of two primary forest certification standards in North America and is recognized and endorsed by the leading international forest certification system, Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). PEFC-endorsed certification systems around the globe, including the SFI program, account for 478 million acres of forestland - more than any other third-party forest certification system.
