Vicksburg Mill
|
Overview Located 15 miles north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the Vicksburg mill resides on a 1200 acres site, adjacent to the Yazoo River, and produces unbleached kraft linerboard.
Production The mill utilizes a single 374" wide Beloit paper machine. |
 |
| As a result of a modernization program in 1989, the mill realized substantially improved moisture uniformity and a smoother print surface for greater top-to-bottom compression. Already one of the most efficient mills in the world, Vicksburg has one of the most productive linerboard machines due in part to the mill's streamlined mix. |
 |
Vicksburg not only ships by rail and truck, but also by barge to strategically located distribution centers within the U.S. The Vicksburg mill quality system is certified to the ISO 9002 standard.
Environmental Stewardship The Vicksburg mill, from start up to current operation, has continuously maintained 100% compliance with environmental guidelines. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and EPA routinely conduct compliance inspections, and the inspection results confirm the mill's outstanding management of environmental issues. Due to the mill's commitment to environmental compliance, MDEQ recommended the mill to cottonseed suppliers as a beneficial use of outdated cottonseed inventory. Instead of disposing of cottonseed in a landfill, the seed is burned as a waste fuel in the mill's power boiler.
In 1994, the Vicksburg mill was the first union facility in the pulp and paper industry to be awarded VPP STAR status by the Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for Region IV. Due to its good working relationship and the trust established with OSHA, the mill has been asked to assist OSHA in conducting on site reviews for industries seeking VPP STAR status. Due to the mill's long history of safe operations, Vicksburg has been recognized by the state, industry, OSHA, and International Paper as an exemplary leader in safety.
Community Involvement As selected by the citizens poll in Warren County, for seven consecutive years the mill won the Industry of the Year award for the best industry to work for in the community. Many of the mill's 350 employees help support the Warren County United Way of West Mississippi which was established in 1990. Many of the mill's employees are volunteers in the community for non-profit organizations ranging from battered women and children's shelters to coaching baseball, football, soccer, and swimming teams.
